The Ure collections contains original ancient musical instruments, reconstructions, and ancient illustrations of music and musical practices in their social contexts. In collaboration with British Museum scholars, researchers at the Museum are looking into reconstructing musical sounds and experiences from the meagre evidence that has come down to us and with the aid of scientific analyses and reconstructions. This work is relevant to our digital humanities as well as materials science research.
On the occasion of MOISA 2018—the 11th international conference of MOISA, The International Society for the Study of Greek & Roman Music & its Cultural Heritage—which we hosted, we launched an exhibition on Music & Materiality.
