The Ure Museum is a small university Museum. It houses the fourth largest collection of ancient Greek ceramics in Britain and also contains an interesting collections of artefacts from ancient Egypt. The Greek pottery collection is very regionally and stylistically thorough, containing pottery artefacts from every major locale, including Sicily, the various regions of Greek Italy, Sparta, Corinth, Athens, Argos, Crete, and all other areas of note.
What We Offer:
We offer bespoke sessions that cover the following:
- Lectures on ancient art by a University specialist covering ancient pottery, painting, sculpture, and music, using the collections to focus on specifics covered by the A Level syllabus. These talks are flexible and can be structured to meet the needs of a particular class as requested by teachers.
- Opportunities for close observation and handling of real artefacts. Handling is used to explain the creation and decoration of pottery objects, and show various vase depictions of mythological and social events which occur around vases. This also allows students a chance at first hand interaction with objects from the ancient world.
- Time for student discussion about specific objects and the questions about the ancient world raised by the objects.
- Opportunities to use other Classics Department facilities such as a specialist library or discussion spaces, if requested.
