van Rijn, Rembrandt Harmenszoon
Date: 1606-1669
Born in Leiden (Netherlands), Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, most commonly known as Rembrandt, was a painter and printmaker.
Building his career mostly on private commissions, he specialised in portraits and historical, biblical and mythological paintings. The influence of Italian art in Rembrandt’s work can be seen in his use of chiaroscuro, using dramatic contrasts between light and dark. However, Rembrandt developed his own version applying a single source of light on the subject, which became his signature style. He is regarded as one of the most influential artists in history and a key figure of the Baroque.
The University Art Collection holds one etching by Rembrandt.
