Tunnicliffe, Charles

Date: 1901-1979

After studying at Macclesfield School of Art, Charles Tunnicliffe won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art. An internationally recognised painter and printmaker, Tunnicliffe included animals and birds in most of his artworks.

Elected a Royal Academician in 1954, Tunnicliffe is best known for illustrating Brooke Bond tea cards and Henry Williamson’s Tarka the Otter, as well as several Ladybird books including the What to Look for series. He was also awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds in 1975.
