While working in an architect’s office, Charles Samuel Keene spent his spare time painting watercolours. These were noticed by Whympers, a wood engravers. He spent five years as an apprentice engraver there before working for the Illustrated London News and later the satirical Punch magazine.
Keene worked primarily in pen and ink and has been called one of the finest black-and-white artists in England. His etchings have also been praised.
The University of Reading Art Collection holds three works by Charles Keene.
