Gwynne-Jones, Allan

While studying at the Slade School of Art, Allan Gwynne-Jones was commissioned into the Welsh Guards Cheshire Regiment in 1914. After suffering a wound at the Battle of the Somme, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order.

After demobilisation in 1919 Gwynne-Jones taught at the Royal College of Art, where he was made Professor of Painting between 1923 and 1930. He resigned to join the staff of the Slade, staying until 1958 when his own paintings, particularly his portraits and flowers, had gained renown.

During the Second World War, he taught part-time at the University of Reading’s School of Fine Art. Made a Royal Academician in 1956, he was appointed a CBE in 1980, just two years before his death.

The University Art Collection holds one painting by Allan Gwynne-Jones, entitled ‘Portrait of Lord Edward Ettingdene Bridges’.
