Cope, Arthur Stockdale

Date: 1857-1940

The son of painter Charles West Cope, Arthur Stockdale Cope trained at the Carey’s Art School, before transferring to the Royal Academy in 1874.

He established his own portrait practice, where his sitters were often high ranking members of society. These include Kings Edward VII, George V, and Edward VIII, Kaiser Wilhelm II, and the Archbishop of Canterbury.

As if not busy enough in his painting practice, Cope also started an art school in South Kensington.

The University Art Collection holds six portraits by Cope, featuring a variety of sitters associated with the University.
