Cooper, Alfred Egerton

Date: 1883-1974

Born in Tettenhall, Alfred Egerton Cooper attended both the Bilston School of Art and the Royal College of Art. While a student at the RCA, Cooper won a prize judged by John Singer Sargent. Impressed by his skill, Sargent invited Cooper to work as his studio assistant. Cooper’s successful career as a portrait painter was developed through contacts made at this time.

Queen Elizabeth II, King George VI, Sir Winston Churchill, and high-ranking members of the British Armed Forces are among those who sat for Cooper.

The University Art Collection holds one painting by Alfred Egerton Cooper, entitled ‘Francis Evelyn Countess of Warwick’.
