Caulfield, Patrick

Having studied at the Chelsea School of Art and the Royal College of Art, Patrick Caulfield came to prominence in the mid-1960s. His artistic style is characterised by its 2D appearance and lack of visible brushwork. It is also accompanied by geometric shapes, bright colours, and black outlines reflecting the Pop Art influence of the period.

Caulfield’s work focuses on traditional environments, mingled with the exotic, including Mediterranean scenes; with Caulfield later making use of photorealism. He self-identified as a ‘formal artist’ during his lifetime and a successor of painting traditions from the Modern Masters.

The University Art Collection holds two screen prints by Patrick Caulfield, on a variety of subjects.
