University College Reading: Book of Remembrance, World War One

The Book of Remembrance of those Members of The University College Reading who fell in The War 1914-1918 was compiled in the years following the end of World War One to commemorate those from the University who had served and died in the conflict. It contains black and white photographs of each person, with name, rank and regiment and a list of those fallen.

Its conception is connected to the University’s war memorial. The University of Reading War Memorial is a clock tower located on the London Road Campus of the University of Reading to remember members of the University who have died in conflict. It was designed by Herbert Maryon and completed and dedicated in 1924. The names of subsequent deaths have been added since. In 1987 it was designated a Grade II listed building.

The Book of Remembrance was digitised as part of the Arts Council England funded “Reading Connections” project, begun in 2013 and made available online. Many people responded to these images and posts and further details were added as a result. Following research by Jeremy Jones, (a long-term volunteer with the archives), names missing from the Book and Memorial were added in 2018 as part of the centenary Armistice Day memorial.
