The National Archives

The National Archives is the official archive and publisher for the UK government, and for England and Wales. Our holdings contain over 1,000 years of records created and collected by the central government and major courts of law.

The National Archives fulfils a leadership role for the archive sector and offers expert advice in information and records management. We are also an Independent Research Organisation. Staff lead major research projects, independently and in collaboration. Our research addresses questions of major significance today, shaping interdisciplinary debates in arts, humanities, and social science, data science, digital and computational approaches, archival theory and practice, and conservation and heritage science.

The National Archives holds a rich collection of records which help inform our understanding of environmental histories. These include documentation on environmental emergencies, and records relating to the distribution, ownership and use of land. Transformations in official responses to the global climate emergency, government climate action, and international policies can also be traced through our records.
