Volunteers are the lifeblood of the University’s museums and collections. We love working with volunteers. And people love volunteering with us too.

We want you to feel part of a team, to have fun and meet new people, get a chance to explore a hobby or interest, or perhaps to gain experience in the workplace while developing supplementary skills to enhance a CV.

Our roles are varied and well-supported, and volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds.  We aim to reflect the diverse community of Reading. We won a 2019 Investing in Volunteers accreditation, the UK quality standard for good practice in volunteer management.

Whether you want to greet visitors and be front of house, support under 5s with their learning at The MERL’s Friday Fledglings, help us check in with our visitors or be involved with our ongoing archiving and collections management, we’re dedicated to giving you the best experience possible.  And we’re always thinking of new ways volunteers can get involved with our programming.

Be sure to take a look at our museums and collections’ websites below for the opportunities thare are available. We’d love to hear from you!
